Natural burials
Natural or ‘green’ burial is the most environmentally responsible funeral choice and caters for the needs of those who prefer to live simply, thoughtfully, and in harmony with nature.
It involves caring for the person who has died in as natural a way as possible (no embalming), choosing a biodegradable coffin or shroud, and burial in a shallow grave where the body can return swiftly to its natural elements in the oxygen-rich upper layers of soil.
Natural burial grounds are managed to enhance biodiversity, and over time become beautiful, richly populated havens for wildlife, creating a lasting legacy for those who have been buried there.
Much like our woodland areas, our meadows are encouraged to thrive as nature intends and therefore the grass is cut less than in other areas of the cemetery. Please see our maintenance programme, developed in consultation with Surrey Wildlife Trust, for further information.

Memorials
