Sir Luke FildesĀ  Grade II Listed

Memorial to Sir (Samuel) Luke Fildes, RA (1844-1927).

Portland stone. An upright block in the form of an Athenian steel, or grave-marker, with an elaborate palmette and acanthus-enriched head.

HISTORY: Fildes is best remembered as a painter of social realist scenes; later in his career he turned to portraiture and painted various Edwardian state portraits. He was knighted as a result. His wife Fanny is also commemorated here. Listed for historic and design interest: this is a late example of a Neo-classical memorial.
